The end of the book was very interesting, I kind of upst how it just leaves off the ending. I mean Lucy is pregnant from a man that has raped her and the actual father could possibley be the boy that lives on her land. How sick and twisted is that?! I love that Laurie finally beat the living crap out that kid, he was peeping at Lucy and he was an intruder to her home, raping her and he gets away with it all. I did believe that Lucy was pregnant, so I was ot surprised when this was revealed. This book is based on real life situations, the heroine doesnt always win and the lovers dont always run into the sunset together that’s just the way of the real world. The author successfully makes this clear, not all things end the way we want them to. Petrus is awful character, allowing this kid to stay on Lucy’s land and be apart of his family is insaine! This kid might be blood but I mean come literally no justice for these poor characters. And what about this weird thing going on with Bev and Laurie? They are not lovers anymore, so does Laurie just stay in that town working for Bev till his money is gone? What about his house being broken into? I think it was melainie’s boyfriend, but I could be wrong? And that meeting in the parking lot…. weird. OH! What about the chick he picked up on the street? He is getting with girls like 10 years younger than Lucy, that just makes my stomach turn. This ending was not what I expected in the least, but perhaps that is what the author was looking for.

I also didn’t like the ending too much. I think that Lurie was a little late when it comes to fighting. He should have done far more when the in the bathroom. Maybe used a toilet plunger as a club. or stuck a bar of soap in his sock.

This is interesting thinking:)
I also think that hero and heroine are always win, so this story makes feeling bad. Most of all people might not like this ending, but this ending makes many possibility of after story.

Michelle-
I like what you said about this book as a true depiction of real life events verses the “happily ever after” song stories usually tell. Coetzee does something for the reader through this novel. This novel tracts the brutal occurrences that happened during Apartheid without specifically stating that the novel is based off of Apartheid. This novel has many levels and although it looks simple it isn’t. It magnifies the word brutality, the brutality of relationships, brutality of scandal, and the brutality of rape. As readers we become cognizant of past events and sympathetic.

I know how you feel; I don’t like all of these cliff hangers. I don’t like imagining things for myself. I want to be told!!

I feel sorry to the character, Lucy.. however she can be very annoying at times. She should show more strength of character. Her life has gone from bad to worse: she has fincancial worries, there is a failed relationship in her past, she has had an abortion. And above all there is her inaction after she has been raped by men from the neighbourhood

yeah i agree with michelle-this book would have ended in a hundred different ways. There are still a number of questions yet to be answered. As for david Lurie, one would think that with everything he has been through he would want to let the younger generation out of his love life -but nope!.Plus this really sick thing going on between him and Bev shaw.
